- "Tagua", the Vegetable Ivory -
Tagua is the seed of a palm that grows in the Amazonic
rainforest of Ecuador.
The fruit of the palm contains several seeds, different in size
and shape, whose jelly like edible core eventually harden to
resemble animal ivory.
These seeds are harvested by Indios and then used to manufacture
different kind of handcraft objects.
The vegetable ivory does not compromise rainforest habitat. Its
use to manufacture objects helps to conserve and protect rare
endangered species of animals that have been a source of ivory,
as well as providing a sustainable income for forest peoples.
